Mexican American compared to non-Hispanic white participants reported greater sleepiness 90 days after stroke. * This ethnic disparity persisted when controlling for confounding variables. * Respiratory event index measured soon after stroke was not associated with 90-day post-stroke subjective sleepiness.

Relevance: To examine the association between ethnicity and 90-day post-stroke subjective sleepiness, an important determinant of quality of life, as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), among ischemic stroke survivors.
